I spent my entire 20's being obsessed with finding my so-called purpose. At times, itfelt like a real crisis (classic case of Saturn's return).
Because I don't see the title of web designer as a firm qualifier for my identity, I put less pressure on myself. I really, trully just woke up one day and realized that, among the million other careers I would love to have, web design was just as enough as any other. I believe because I am not so attached to what this might mean about me, it makes me a more compassionate, genuine and grounded human being to professionally collaborate with. Does this mean I don't take my work seriously? On the contrary! It only means I don't intend to let my career, success, (or lack of success) ever get in the way of my humanness, because this, in my eyes, is a much more important qualifier for my being than any career I could ever pick for myself.
Switching 'what' for 'something' in the original Ikigai model allowed my brain to accept that among the million different business ventures I could possibly pick, web design was just as right enough as any other.
Obviously, I know there are more pieces to the OG Ikigai. In my case, the inner parts made me dizzy with anxiety, so I made my own by choosing to leave these parts out. What I realized in the process is that my humaness will always be a more important definer than any career I'll ever pick. My 'purpose' doesn't have much to do with what I choose to do in exchange for money. It has to do with how beautiful a human being I can be.
